Isaiah Cornelius is a choral educator, church musician, new teacher mentor, and advocate for music education whose work spans the classroom, the sanctuary, and the broader professional community. He currently serves as Choral Director at Lake Norman Charter Middle School and Director of Music Ministries at Fair View United Methodist Church — roles that reflect both his vocational range and his deep belief that music is meant to be lived, not just performed. His ensembles regularly earn Superior and Excellent ratings at adjudicated choral events, a testament to his commitment to musical excellence and his ability to draw the best out of every singer in the room. Beyond his daily work, he serves as Website Liaison for the NC Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association and holds dual roles with the NC Music Educators Association as Student Activities Coordinator and Technology Facilitator for the Middle School Choral Section.
Music has always been in Isaiah's blood. Raised in a family full of singers, instrumentalists, and lifelong appreciators of music, he was shaped early by his mother and maternal grandmother, whose love for song set the tone for everything that followed. His passion for choral music took root in middle school and came fully alive in high school, thanks to his chorus teacher, Jan Gore. Jan had a rare gift for seeing what others couldn't yet see in themselves — and what she saw in Isaiah changed the course of his life. She signed him up for his audition at Wingate University, setting him on the path to choral music education. Her influence remains a cornerstone of who he is, even after her passing in early 2023.
Isaiah holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Wingate University (2017) and will complete his Master of Music Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro this summer. He is recognized statewide for his work with NCMEA's adjudicated music performance events in the middle school choral section, having spent the last three years helping to rebuild Music Performance Adjudication following its decline during the COVID-19 pandemic — significantly increasing participation and working to ensure that adjudication remains accessible and equitable for ensembles across North Carolina. His interests extend well beyond the rehearsal room — he brings a background in technical theater and event management, a fluency with educational technology, an intermediate command of the piano, and an occasional hand in composition and arranging. A maker at heart, Isaiah's creativity doesn't stop when the music does; he finds equal joy in the kitchen — cooking and baking with the same intentionality he brings to a choral score — as well as in design and other creative pursuits. He is a regular attendee of Carol Krueger Literacy Workshops and is actively pursuing a certification in Library and Information Sciences. At the core of everything Isaiah does is a genuine care for people — a commitment to meeting students, singers, and colleagues where they are and helping them recognize and honor the gifts they already carry.
